A WESTERN LANDSCAPE REIMAGINED

Geronimo: An American Legend tells a story rooted in southern Arizona and northern Mexico - the Geronimo movie locations of Moab. Walter Hill chose Utah.

Inspired in part by the visual tradition established by John Ford, Hill turned to the towering red-rock walls, canyons and open country around Moab to create a landscape grand enough for the story he wanted to tell.

Historically, Geronimo, Naiche, Lozen and a small group of Chiricahua Apache families were moving through the far harsher and very different country of southern Arizona and Sonora as they resisted the efforts of the United States Army before Geronimo eventually surrendered.

Hill wasn't recreating that geography literally, he was creating a cinematic West, and standing in the actual locations gives us the opportunity to explore why.

We'll travel through some of the landscapes Walter Hill used for key sequences from Geronimo: An American Legend and look at how the director transformed them on screen.

You'll explore locations connected with scenes including:

  • Geronimo, played by Wes Studi, and Lieutenant Gatewood, played by Jason Patric, escaping from the Tucson posse and holding off their pursuers

  • The sweeping country used as General Crook's troops search for Geronimo

  • The rugged landscapes crossed by Chato, played by Steve Reevis, and scout Al Sieber, played by Robert Duvall, as they track the Chiricahua

  • Geronimo's surrender sequence, where Hill used the Utah landscape to reimagine Fort Bowie and the Arizona frontier

WHY MOAB?

One of the most interesting questions isn't simply where Geronimo was filmed, it's why Walter Hill chose to film it here. Moab looks nothing like much of the country where Geronimo's final campaign actually unfolded, but that was deliberate.

You see, Hill was working within a cinematic language established by generations of Western filmmakers, particularly John Ford, where landscape does more than provide scenery. It creates scale, atmosphere, isolation and myth.

Standing in the actual locations, we'll look at how Hill uses the landscape as part of the storytelling and how changing the geography changes the way an audience experiences the story.

THE DIRECTOR'S VIEW!

As with all Western Movie Tours experiences, we're not simply going to point at a rock and tell you an actor once stood beside it - we'll look at the locations through a director's eyes. Why was this particular landscape chosen? Where would the camera have been? How does a director use the scale of the landscape to make riders, soldiers or actors appear vulnerable, powerful or isolated? What do movement, framing and geography contribute to a scene before a character even speaks? You'll begin to see the locations not simply as places where filming happened, but as filmmaking tools.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE STORY

Geronimo: An American Legend brought together an extraordinary cast, including Wes Studi, Jason Patric, Robert Duvall, Gene Hackman and Matt Damon.

As we explore the locations, we'll discuss the performances and the choices behind the film's portrayal of Geronimo, Brigadier General George Crook, Lieutenant Charles Gatewood, Al Sieber and the people around them.

We'll also consider what the film chose to emphasize, what it simplified and what disappeared entirely when history was shaped into a Hollywood narrative.

FACT, FICTION AND THE REAL GERONIMO STORY

The real history behind Geronimo: An American Legend is considerably more complicated than any two-hour movie can convey because Geronimo was not acting alone. The story involved Naiche, Lozen, Chiricahua families, Apache scouts, military officers and competing political and military pressures on both sides of the border.

Throughout the day, we'll separate the historical record from Walter Hill's interpretation.

Where does the movie follow history, or compressed? Which is history and where does drama take over? Most interestingly, why?

Our day also includes a visit to Red Cliffs Lodge, an iconic part of Moab's film history, where memorabilia and material connected with productions filmed in the region help place Geronimo within the much broader story of moviemaking in southeastern Utah.

It's another reminder that the red-rock country around Moab hasn't simply been scenery.

For decades, filmmakers used this landscape to create their own version of the American West.
