For fans of The Searchers, this is the essential Monument Valley movie tour.  We'll travel through the landscape Ford transformed into the Texas frontier and visit the locations behind some of the movie's most unforgettable scenes. You'll stand where the Edwards homestead once stood, see where Ethan Edwards discovers it in flames, visit the country through which Ethan and Martin Pawley pursue Scar, and find the locations Ford used to create images that became part of Western movie history.

You'll visit locations including:

  • The site of the Edwards homestead and its famous Monument Valley backdrop

  • The location where Ethan sees the homestead burning

  • Ford's Point, used during the pursuit of Scar and Debbie

  • The locations of the dead cattle and Comanche burial scenes

  • The place where Ethan reveals that he found Lucy

  • The location of Scar's camp

  • The country used for Ethan and Martin's final pursuit of Debbie

But this isn't simply a hunt for movie locations!

Standing where Ford actually made the film, you'll discover how he made it: why he brought an enormous Hollywood production into what was then an extraordinarily remote landscape, how he could shoot with remarkable speed, what happened behind the camera, and how Monument Valley itself became one of his most powerful storytelling tools.

We'll also explore the real events that inspired Alan LeMay's novel and separate the history from the Hollywood storytelling.

If The Searchers is one of your favorite Westerns, you'll never watch it the same way again.

She Wore A Yellow Ribbon

She Wore a Yellow Ribbon – Monument Valley Movie Locations

Technicolor, the cavalry, Monument Valley and John Wayne in one of the most memorable performances of his career.  She Wore a Yellow Ribbon gave John Ford the chance to turn Monument Valley into a moving Western painting.

On this tour, we'll visit the locations where he created some of the movie's signature scenes and discover the stories behind the making of the film.

You'll visit locations including:

  • Captain Nathan Brittles' office and the remains or locations of post buildings

  • The site of fictional Fort Starke

  • The location of the Arapaho ambush

  • The country used for Sergeant Tyree's thrilling horseback chase

  • The location of the famous lightning-storm sequence

  • Chief Pony That Walks' camp and his meeting with Brittles

Along the way, you'll hear how John Wayne almost didn't get the role of Captain Brittles, why his performance in Red River changed Ford's mind about him as an actor, and how Ford drew inspiration from Western artists Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell.

And then there's that storm!

One of the film's defining images shows Brittles and his cavalry riding across Monument Valley beneath a spectacular lightning-filled sky. We'll take you to the location and tell you how a risky decision by Ford helped create the sequence that contributed to cinematographer Winton Hoch winning an Academy Award.

Set against the aftermath of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the tour also explores where Ford followed history, where Hollywood took liberties, and the stories behind the people and events that inspired the film.  It's classic John Ford country, experienced from inside the movie.

Cheyenne Autumn

Cheyenne Autumn – Monument Valley Film Locations

Cheyenne Autumn brought John Ford back to Monument Valley for the last Western of his career.  This is a very different Ford movie and a very different tour.

We'll follow the locations used to tell the story of the Northern Cheyenne journey home, while discovering what Ford was trying to accomplish with the film, what happened during production, and how the Hollywood version compares with the extraordinary events that began in 1878.

You'll visit locations including:

  • The Northern Cheyenne camp seen at the beginning of the film

  • The location of Captain Archer's confrontation with the Northern Cheyenne

  • The vast landscape where Archer searches for signs of the fleeing group

  • The location of the epic river-crossing sequence

  • Victory Cave, where Secretary of the Interior Carl Schurz and Archer meet Little Wolf and Dull Knife

Along the way, we'll explore the unusual story behind Ford's final Western: his decision to shoot in 70mm Super Panavision, the casting choices he wanted but Hollywood didn't give him, and even the strange Jimmy Stewart Wyatt Earp sequence that seems to belong to an entirely different movie.

Most importantly, we'll look beyond Hollywood.

Cheyenne Autumn drew upon the real Northern Cheyenne exodus from Indian Territory toward their northern homeland. Standing in the locations Ford used to tell that story, we'll explore what actually happened, what the movie changed, and where Ford used history as the foundation for his own cinematic story.

It's part movie-location adventure, part behind-the-scenes story and part journey into the history that inspired Ford's final farewell to the Western.
